The Village Map is built on a simple promise: the evidence is the product, and your identity is not part of that evidence. We collect as little as possible, we never track you, and the demand log never stores who searched. Here is exactly what that means.
01Who we are
The Village Map is a mobile app operated by Project Planet LLC, a California limited liability company. The app is a directory of Black-owned businesses that also makes visible what a neighborhood is asking for. For any privacy question or request, contact us at hello@villagemap.app.
02What we collect
The Village Map has no accounts and no passwords. We only collect information when you choose to give it to us, or when the app needs it to work. Specifically:
- Email address — only when you voluntarily opt in to be notified about a business, or when you send a warm-introduction request. We use it to notify you when a matching business appears, or to pass your introduction to the business you asked about. Nothing else.
- Approximate location — at the ZIP-area level only. We use it to sort businesses by distance from you and to log anonymous demand. We do not store a precise position.
- Photos — only when you upload one while adding a business to the directory.
03The demand log never stores who searched
When you search and find nothing, the app records that a search happened in a ZIP area — so unmet demand becomes visible evidence. It never records who searched. There is no identifier tying a search back to you. This is by design and it does not bend.
Location used for the demand log is reduced to a ZIP-area centroid, never a precise coordinate.
04What we never do
We do not sell your data. We show no advertising. We use no third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs of any kind. We do not build a profile of you. Because there are no accounts, there is nothing to log in to and nothing to breach in the way accounts are usually breached.
05Who processes data on our behalf
A small number of trusted service providers process data so the app can function:
- Supabase — our database and photo storage provider, which hosts business listings, opt-in emails, and uploaded photos.
- Resend — our email delivery provider, which sends the notification and introduction emails you ask for.
These providers process data only to deliver these functions, not for their own purposes.
06Your choices and your rights
Because we hold so little, control is straightforward:
- Location — you can grant or deny location access at any time in your device settings. The app checks before prompting.
- Photo library — access is requested only when you add a business, and can be revoked in your device settings.
- Email deletion — you can ask us to delete an email address we hold for you at any time. Email hello@villagemap.app and we will remove it.
If you live in California, the CCPA gives you the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to request its deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. To make any of these requests, email us at the address above. We do not sell personal information, so there is no sale to opt out of.
07Children
The Village Map is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
08Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
